Evaluating theories of bilingual language control using computational models

چکیده

Bilingual language control refers to a bilingual’s ability speak exclusively in one without the unintended intruding. It has been debated literature whether bilinguals need an inhibitory mechanism output or non-inhibitory can be used. This paper presents mathematical models instantiating two accounts. The explain how participants’ reaction times production (naming) are impacted by across-trial semantic relatedness and consistency of (same different across trials). models’ predictions were compared data from experiment which participants named semantically-related -unrelated pictures their first second language. Results indicate that within-language facilitation effects abolished after switch, supporting Inhibitory Model. However, was observed over course ‘stay’ trials no switch required, contrary both models. A conducted determine origin this unexpected facilitation, separating spreading activation incremental learning effects. results suggest Experiment 1 due activation. Together, modeling switching abolishes effects, but cumulative interference (created learning) is unaffected switching. suggests (1) non-competitive, (2) between-language competitive (3) plays role bilingual speech production.

Wider Context by Using Bilingual Language Models in Machine Translation

In past Evaluations for Machine Translation of European Languages, it could be shown that the translation performance of SMT systems can be increased by integrating a bilingual language model into a phrase-based SMT system. In the bilingual language model, target words with their aligned source words build the tokens of an n-gram based language model. We analyzed the effect of bilingual languag...

Title: Verifying theories of language acquisition using computer models of language evolution Running title: Verifying theories of language acquisition

This paper presents a dense database study of child language acquisition from a usage-based perspective of language acquisition and a new analysis of data from an earlier study on simulating language evolution. The new analysis is carried out to show how computer modelling studies can be designed to generate predictions (results) that can be compared quantitatively with empirical data obtained ...

Evaluating computational models of explanation using human judgments

We evaluate four computational models of explanation in Bayesian networks by comparing model predictions to human judgments. In two experiments, we present human participants with causal structures for which the models make divergent predictions and either solicit the best explanation for an observed event (Experiment 1) or have participants rate provided explanations for an observed event (Exp...

Language control in the bilingual brain.

How does the bilingual brain distinguish and control which language is in use? Previous functional imaging experiments have not been able to answer this question because proficient bilinguals activate the same brain regions irrespective of the language being tested. Here, we reveal that neuronal responses within the left caudate are sensitive to changes in the language or the meaning of words. ...

Computational Models of Language Acquisition

Child language acquisition, one of Nature’s most fascinating phenomena, is to a large extent still a puzzle. Experimental evidence seems to support the view that early language is highly formulaic, consisting for the most part of frozen items with limited productivity. Fairly quickly, however, children find patterns in the ambient language and generalize them to larger structures, in a process ...
